Kamigamo ,Original woodblock print by Clifton Karhu (1927-2017) . signed and titled Kamigamo , numbered 13/80 ,Framed .Very good condition Clifton Karhu ,american of Finnish descent ,came to Japan after the war and was stationed in Sasebo navy base from 1946 to 1948 . He returned to the states and studied art in Minneapolis from 1950 to 1952 then decided to study theology and became a minister of the lutheran church .In 1955 He went back to Japan as a missionary first in shiga , then kyoto ,in 1958 . he left the church and went with his wife to gifu where he started to paint again , watercolors and oil paintings ,did his first exhibition in ShinGifu gallery in 1961 and won the first prize by the central pacific art society the same year . for family reasons , he decided to move to kyoto where he started to learn the art of Japanese wood carving technics that he was going to master . His work was internationally recognized and in 1977 was elected Kyoto representative of Japan print association . He moved to Kazuemachi ,Kanazawa in1995 where he continued his work until his death in 2007 . His works are exposed in many international museums as the Boston fine art museum and the Minneapolis Museum of arts..
